Dear Friends,
As most of you know, Mrs. Sandra Dunagan Deal passed away last week after a lengthy battle with cancer. In her honor, I would like to pass along some of the sentiments that were shared during last weekend's memorial service.
Everyone who knew Mrs. Deal personally could attest to her commitment to early childhood education. This passion extended throughout her life, from her time working as a teacher, to serving as First Lady, to supporting the mission of the Deal Center named in her honor.
I have always had such admiration for Mrs. Deal, not only as a leader but also as a devoted wife, mother, advocate, and friend. As she was eulogized, I heard again and again from those who knew her best about her ability to make everyone feel seen, feel heard, and feel special. She was as authentic as she was generous, kind, and loving.
Although this is a tremendously sad time for her family, friends, and colleagues, I also feel grateful to have known Mrs. Deal and to have the pleasure of serving as the Executive Director of the Deal Center. My hope is that each of us remains steadfast in our support of her legacy by continuing our commitment to early language and literacy throughout the state. Thank you for all you do for Georgia's children and let us always honor Mrs. Deal through our work.
Sincerely,
Dr. Theresa Magpuri-Lavell
Executive Director
